Hey, Cousins, I Want Your Opinions
Nov. 8th, 2019 11:11 amFirst of all, my apologies for being a day late with the Song Story Challenge, but it is posted now.
As you know, I've moved from New York to Nevada not too long ago and I believe I told you how my kitchen sink had backed up while I was still in NY and how I was living with no kitchen. Anyway, my Homeowner's Association rep told me how much they would pay to rectify the problem and I could go place my order for my new cabinets. Yay!
I went to Cabinets to Go, which is a national chain. After the problems I had with my guest bathroom, I said I was going with professionals so I wouldn't encounter problems. I sat down with a Emily, a young woman who was very pleasant. I had brought pictures of what my kitchen looked like to show her. I picked out my cabinets, countertop, and sink. Fine. I thought and mentioned that the cabinets would arrive in 4 to 6 weeks. Emily said no; they will be in their factory the following Monday and the handles and knobs you want will be FedExed directly to you. Great! And the company we use for installation will call you within 48 hours to set up an appointment date. Are you picking up the cabinets yourself or do you want the company to do it for a fee payable to them? I say let them do it as I have no way to bring the things here. The company called me and we agreed on the Wednesday after the Monday delivery. Fantastic!
Now at this point I want to mention that I had told Emily that I know absolutely nothing about renovations and what needs to be done beyond what I want done. I. Know. Nothing. You will have to help me. Fine. I sign and initial all the paperwork and she tells me someone will come and do final measurements to make sure there are no issues as she had outlined a kitchen based on my measurements. Terrific.

Enter Yark; I'm sure the spelling is wrong, but that's how his name is pronounced. He is a tall, yummy looking Polish guy with matching accent who comes to measure. He also informs me that he will be back to install the cabinets on installation day. I hope his coworkers look as good as he does.
I should have known I was going to have problems when, out of the blue last week, I thought: When I bought the sink, did the faucet come with it? I live very close by the store, so I go and ask Emily, hey does my sink include a faucet fixture? I know, the question sounds dumb even to me, but when I was in the showroom, I had pointed at a sink in a kitchen mockup and said I want that, meaning THE ENTIRE THING. She says, no, you only ordered the sink. So, as I'm ordering the faucet to go with the sink, I remind her that I told her that I KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT RENOVATIONS SO I NEED YOUR INPUT. Is there anything else I should know? No, you're good.
Yesterday was Installation Day. I was excited! Then I remember that I didn't get FedExed anything. Crap! I have to wait until CTG opens. Fortunately, the contractor company calls to say Yark is finishing another job and will be there by 10:30 instead of 9. Perfect, CTG opens at 10.
I call and Emily answers and I tell her I didn't get the hardware. Not to worry, she says, the hardware is with the cabinets at the factory; we changed that procedure after you had placed your order. I swallow back my first retort which would have been, when I asked you was there anything else I need to know, why did you say no? I say fine, because it basically is. I was afraid they had been delivered to the wrong place.
Yark comes with my stuff and as he's unloading his vehicle, he comes into the house and says, oh, your cabinets are still here. Um, yeah, where else would they be? I was only doing install, not demolition. WHAT?!?!?
I call the store and am speaking with Brian, Emily's boss and I'm pissed. Why wasn't I informed about this? The word "demolition" never came out of her mouth! Sorry, but you signed off and it's in the contract. I didn't have my contract in front of me and though I could have sworn the word "demolition" wasn't there, I had to admit to myself that I had skimmed, not thoroughly read the document.
Yark says he can do the demo; I only need to inform his office this is what I need done. Okay another $250 to them. He does it swiftly, it's a small kitchen and the lower cabinets had been taken out when the mold appeared. He begins assembling the cabinets and putting them in place as I don't have a lot of room for a staging area. Fine.
Toward the end of the afternoon, I get an email from my HOA rep asking for a copy of the paid invoice so that she can start the process to reimburse me what they are paying and, by the way, is my contractor replacing the drywall that ServePro, the company that handled the mold, removed?
My first thought was, of course, but after what I just told you, I decided I better check. I look behind the cabinets and there is no drywall. I am now enraged. Yark had left for the day. It was after 5 and CTG closes at 6. I knew Emily left at 5, but her boss stayed till 6 and I went down there to talk to him. I couple of times I had to stop talking and take deep breaths to calm down, but I admit I dropped several f bombs.
I said to him that I had told Emily that I knew absolutely nothing and she had to help me so why in the f**k are we here? His argument to me was why would she talk to me about drywall when they don't sell it and my argument to him was I showed her the pictures! She knew what it looked like! She could have said I see you have no drywall and you could/should mention that to the contractor! And since I'm here, show me in the contract I signed (he had it on his desk) where it says anything about demolition! He points to a clause that I had read and when I said the word demolition doesn't appear, he says but it says we don't do anything outside of our scope of services. My reply to that was that the only experience I had had with renovations prior to this was my guest bathroom and that guy had used the words install and installation and the first thing he did in there was demo the existing bathroom and remove it. How am I supposed to know you mean something different and you're using the same language? I TOLD EMILY I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING! Did you think I was joking?
So now, I'm still angry and I say that based on what's been happening, I no longer trust Emily, so when I ordered and paid for my countertop, did she include the backsplash? Because I had showed her (and then I showed him) pictures of the existing countertop and backsplash. He says and shows me on his computer that that is a specific question that is to be asked. Good, show me on my order that it's there and that's one less thing for me to be concerned about. He can't find it.
He had just finished telling me that cabinets and countertops and backsplashes were her area of expertise and how unfair I was being to be angry because she hadn't said anything about drywall after looking at the pictures and she didn't include the backsplash? So he said he was going to speak with her the next day (yesterday) and call me back. Did he call you? Because he sure didn't call me. I think it's because she told him she hadn't mentioned or included the backsplash in my order and I had told him that if she hadn't, they needed to comp me the damn thing for all the aggravation I'm going through.
Opinions, Cousins, am I wrong here? I haven't told you all of it, either. I'm starving and I have no kitchen at all. But what do you think so far?
To be continued...
