He's phenomenal in "The Blacklist," isn't he? Such a range of acting skills. I get chills watching his eyes. And the corners of his mouth. One muscle moves, and it's like he's spoken five pages of dialogue. Remarkable.
He was always an interesting actor, quirky. But what's amazing is how much he changed from that waif thin young man with a full head of hair into this mature version of himself. I think he's brilliant and still marvel at Boston Legal's dynamic duo of him and William Shatner. I may have to watch the series again.
What is amazing about his eyes is that without his glasses, he really can't see faces. He can't wear contacts. His facial expressions and tics do show a range of emotion. I don't know if you saw the Age of Ultron, but the motion capture is phenomenal. To see Ultron tilt his head and quirk his lips like Spader is crazy!
I was telling a friend the other day that I didn't see his early roles because he was in a lot of movies that weren't my thing at the time. One of my fave movies from the 80s is Sex, Lies & Videotape because of the male lead who was so believable. I had no idea that was James Spader until years later. Same thing with Star Gate; didn't realize the Egyptologist was Spader. I would overlook him.
When he was younger and supposedly at the height of his beauty, he was not sexy to me because pretty men are not sexy to me and that was how he struck me. As he has aged, he has become incredibly hot to me; his voice has deepened and he is handsome as opposed to pretty.
He and William Shatner are fabulous as Alan and Denny. Alan Shore was my favorite character until Red came along.
