I read laurose8's link with interest, but I don't think it really encapsulates the general feeling.
Boris isn't Trump, the similarities are superficial. Boris is a product of the respectable upper middle class - he IS the establishment - that's why Tories can vote for him.
In addition, he will espouse most European values. The climate change argument in the UK is won. No one except the radical extremes doubts it - you couldn't get elected as a climate change denier.
He is unlikely to unilaterally withdraw the UK from the Iran deal. He's much more likely to move with Europe.
He will say a few mad things, get caught out in a few gaffs, but in the end it will be a question of style not substance. We don't have a Presidential electoral system, so you can only get to the top by getting both the left and the right to vote for you.
He isn't head of state - so he can only embarrass the UK so far - and most ordinary Brits like Boris. Most ordinary Brits don't like Trump.
Whether Boris makes a good PM only time will tell...but I always thought it might be intriguing to see how a Boris-Corbyn Parliament might play out.
Every now and then the UK does something absolutely mad - this might one of those times.
