Well, I Finally Saw The Man from UNCLE!
Aug. 23rd, 2015 03:24 pmI went to the 10:10AM show this morning and I was literally the only one in the theater! That was kind of cool as it allowed me to talk to the screen to my heart's content.
Henry Cavill's Napoleon Solo certainly dressed the part. I felt like he was channeling Robert Vaughn's sense of style. In some ways, he even spoke in the style of RV's Solo. I could have lived without him being an art thief, but whatever. I did like that he is basically self-educated.
I really liked Armie Hammer's Illya Kuryakin. His Russian accent was quite believable. He is not as educated as OriginalRecipe!Illya, but he does come with an interesting angsty backstory.
Hugh Grant's Mr. Waverly was good, too. Did anyone else notice that he called Illya Mr. Kury- A- kin a few times and then switched to Mr. Kury- AH- kin without being corrected?
Victoria was a good villian. Gabby a good accomplice. Whoever mentioned that she might end up as the "April Dancer-esque" character is right, I think. I also liked the tension between her and Illya.
Guy Ritchie's use of split screens did contribute to the 60s feel of the film. His habit of moving back in time a few frames to show what really happened worked well.
The music: The first song heard is "Compared to What" as sung by Roberta Flack and I knew anyone smart enough to use that had to have made a movie I would enjoy. I was disappointed not to hear "I like the sound of funky music!" shout-sung because I was ready to shout-sing it, too. Otherwise, what's an empty theater for??
In conclusion, I would go see a sequel to see how the relationship between Napoleon and Illya grows and how UNCLE develops.
