I do believe it was intended to be taunting: the juvenile delinquents working themselves up into a frenzy that would intimidate the copper and make him withdraw from the obviously dangerous, out of their minds youths who were a threat to civilization. 50's British cinema was in the throes of a literary movement built around Angry Young Men, and this is one of the productions that paid homage to that. Okay, that's my two cents.
I'm sure that was the intent but, when you look at that 1958 scene through 2012 eyes, it is unintentionally erotic. The way the cop is staring at DMc is bizarre to me, though at the time, I sure it meant something quite different. I wonder what DMc would say about that role now?
